Reconceptualising kerbside recycling

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP)

2019 | Semester 1

The challenge

For the past 25 years, a significant portion of recyclables collected at the kerbside has been processed in China. Shortly before this project commenced, China had introduced measures to limit the import of some recyclable materials. The price of recyclables consequently collapsed across the globe, prompting the Victorian Government to consider how it could better support recycling.

The team’s task was to develop proposals for changing the current collection system to improve the environmental fate of domestic waste.
